computerWe’re all familiar with them but frequently we don’t realise we’re reading them so for this post I thought I’d share a definition with you, as unlike ours they’re quite frequently not titled blog so you’re probably not aware you’re reading or following many.

A regularly updated website or web page, typically one run by an individual or small group, that is written in an informal or conversational style.

So, now thanks to Oxford English Dictionary you’ve got your definition, here’s a selection of reasons you should have one in your business.

1. A blog drives traffic to your website – all the social media channels in the world are fantastic but they’re not yours so ultimately you’re using them to drive traffic to your website so that you can do business?  Posting to Facebook or Linkedin may be effective but getting fresh new content onto your website is good for the long term visibility of your business on the web.

2. It’s an opportunity to display your knowledge – whatever your business you’ll want your customers to know you’re up to date on developments in your sector and that aside from what you’ve included in your website pages or brochure that you’ve got a lot more knowledge that could also be of help to them. If you’ve got a lot of expertise in a particular area writing regularly on a topic can generate a following for you based on what you know about that subject and your opinions on it.  And once people become aware that you’re the go-to person on a topic business comes with it.

3. It’s an opportunity to generate leads.  If you’re small business owner looking for ideas for social media content for example you might google it and come across a post like one of our recent ones.  While you’re reading the post you may just browse our other services and realise that we can offer you email marketing or websites too?  Every time somebody searches on google they’ve got something specific in mind and if they find themselves on your site it’s a possible customer for you too.

4. It’s powerful for your SEO – every business owner becomes aware of that term which means search engine optimisation at some point. Despite offers you may receive on unsolicited emails there are no quick ways to get to the top of page one on google but a blog will certainly help you with all of the search engines and will help people find your site on the web.

5. You can add a human voice to the business – your website may have been written in a tone to portray the professionalism of the products or services you offer whereas the blog can be the more personal voice of the company and it’s perhaps not quite so restricted in terminology or legal requirements as other parts of your website are. You can share a little more about what’s happening outside of your offerings such as sponsorship of a local event or team, not requirements for the success of your business but displays the goodwill to your community.

6. As a business your social media plan should include sharing content, this is your shareable content and if it’s done well you may find you have a team of brand advocates or fans out there who are quite happy to share this content for you too.

7. Communication channel – quite often with websites you’re restricted in what you can share, think for example of an ecommerce site with a range of products which may require images, product information, pricing, shipping, tax, product codes but maybe there isn’t an option for sharing a little more about just why you should buy this product?  Your blog can do this for you, just remember to link it back to the product so a reader can easily find out more.  The blog is the least rigid part of your site, you can use it to communicate what you like and depending on your business you can involve various departments or employees so that it’s something of a hub readers will want to explore once they arrive there.
